Healthcare Verification FAQ

Who can SheerID verify with healthcare verification?

This product covers most medical professionals and healthcare workers in multiple locales. See the article, Supported consumer audiences, for up-to-date country availability.

How are the affiliations defined?

As a best practice, we encourage including all available affiliations to increase reach and decrease consumer support requests. For example, we have found that programs without 'Other Health Worker' tend to receive higher levels of consumer support requests, as there are numerous healthcare professions that are not captured by 'Nurses' and 'Doctors.' Available affiliations are listed below:

  • Doctors. Must be physicians
    • Medical Doctors (MDs)
    • Doctors of Osteopathy (DOs)
    • Covered providers include all currently state-licensed physicians and/or surgeons
Only MD and DO are eligible under the Doctor affiliation. All other doctors — Chiropractors, Psychiatrists, Dentists, etc. — are eligible under the Other Health Worker affiliation.
  • Nurses. Any type of licensed nurse is acceptable
    • Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNP)
    • Registered Nurses (RN)
    • Licensed Practical Nurses (PN/LPN)
    • Nurse Anesthetists (NA)
    • Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM)
    • Nurse Practitioners (NP)
    • Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN)
    • Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA)
  • Other Health Workers. Any other licensed medical professional, including Physicians Assistants (PA), Pharmacists, Chiropractors, Psychologists, etc., or anyone currently working at a medical facility
  • Pharmacists and Dentists. These affiliations are only available in EMEA, and are not included by default. If you are interested in including pharmacists and/or dentists in your EMEA-based healthcare program, please inform our Professional Services team when implementing the program.
    • While this affiliation is only available in EMEA, pharmacists and dentists are eligible for verification under 'Other Health Worker' in countries in which the affiliation is not available (e.g., US and CA)

Do EMTs/Paramedics qualify for healthcare verification?

Yes, EMTs/Paramedics can be considered part of the affiliation Other Health Worker. Please note that EMTs/Paramedics also fall under First Responder programs along with police, firefighters, and search and rescue.

What verification methods are used for each country?

In Europe, various sources are used for healthcare verifications. Instant matches will vary based on country (and some countries don't have any instant match). There are three main sources used for healthcare verifications in EMEA:

  • Registers: Every country has it's own register. Note that we don't have this in every country or for every affiliation type.
  • SSO: We use OpenID Connect in every EMEA-enabled country for healthcare verification. If we have the website of the hospital or the healthcare provider, SSO is used to verify the user.
  • Email Domain Validation + Email Loop: We have this in every EMEA-enabled country for healthcare verification. If a user inputs an email address which has the same domain name as the one we're expecting for the organization, and SSO is not available for that organization, email loop will be invoked.

Are authoritative data sources used for 'Other Health Workers,' or are these users verified via document review only?

Authoritative data sources are used for 'Other Health Workers.' In the US, SheerID has a source based on state licensure databases, which includes users with any kind of health-related license. That said, there are numerous 'Other Health Workers' that would not be covered via authoritative review (e.g., health care receptionists, etc), as they are not licensed via a licensing body.

What are the document review requirements to prove healthcare status?

If asked to upload proof of eligibility, consumer documents must be official, issued either by a licensing body or a healthcare facility and must display the consumer's:

  1. First and last* name
  2. Organization - Healthcare verification forms use an open organization list, meaning that the user will see organizations populate in the typeahead when inputting their organization. The consumer is able to select an existing healthcare facility, or they can type in their own if their organization does not populate.
  3. Status/Job title - Nurse, Doctor, Other Health Worker position

*A large number of hospitals omit last names on nurse IDs for security reasons. In this case consumers should upload a supporting document such as a driver's license to meet document review criteria.

Form notes

The healthcare verification form includes an input for postal code. Consumers should enter the postal code of where they are licensed.

For programs including EMEA coverage, the verification form may visualize an additional input field representing the national equivalent of license or registration number, when appropriate. While not a required field, API clients are recommended to include this field to boost the instant rate of their program.

What can be used for document review?

  • ID card
  • Current medical licenses/certificates
  • Paystubs dated within 90 days
  • Signed job offer letter

SheerID can accept multiple documents if a single document does not contain all the required information. The following list of supporting documents are not acceptable on their own, but can be used to supplement other official documentation:

  • Driver's license - can be used to supplement other official documentation. A large number of hospitals omit last names on nurse IDs for security reasons

Documentation notes

  • The organization listed on the document must match what was supplied via the verification form, unless a licensure document is provided (licensure document does not need to match the organization)
  • Status must be clearly noted (e.g., job title must be included on paystub, licensure must specify that the user is a Registered Nurse, etc.)

Unacceptable documents

  • CPR/BLS certification
  • Academic diploma
