Upload image quality requirements

  • Updated

SheerID uses a variety of methods to verify a consumer's status, including an optimized mix of manual and automated document review. Ensuring that uploaded documentation is clearly readable leads to a smoother, faster verification experience. The guidelines below offer consumers best practices for capturing an optimal image of documentation and its successful processing.

Acceptable image size and file types

SheerID upload accepts the following file formats: .jpg, .jpeg, .png, and .gif. All .doc and .docx documents are rejected automatically. Max file size for upload is 10MB.

In accordance with federal law, SheerID does not accept submissions of active duty/reservist military ID cards. Do not upload any such ID cards to SheerID's system.

Capturing the best image of a document

  1. Make sure you have good lighting. If your image is too dark or too bright, it may be too difficult to read.
  2. Make sure the image is in focus, that it is clear and that the text is crisp and easy to read. SheerID recommends using an image with a resolution of at least Full HD (1920x1080) and the autofocus feature. Be sure to take a photo of your original document. Do not take a picture of a screen displaying your document, they are hard to read and may lead to rejection.
  3. Avoid reflections. Glare or reflections can hide or distort information and interfere with review processing. Do not use the flash on your mobile phone when capturing document images.
  4. Make sure your document lies flat and is centered in the photo. The tilt angle of your document should not exceed 10 degrees in any direction. The image of your document should take up most of the screen space, leaving only a small border around the edges. It's important not to crop important information such as document identifying information, i.e. "Ohio Drivers License," or verification information like the name of your organization, or the issuing body of your documentation.
  5. Make sure the background is in clear contrast to your document. Your document may not be recognized if it blends in with the background color.
  6. Feel free to redact, black-out, or cover sensitive information that is unrelated to verification. However, please note that this may increase the likelihood that the document will be rejected.

Taking the best selfie for identity verification

Identity verification requires the use of advanced algorithms to compare a consumer's photo to their government ID. When submitting a photo for verification, there are several requirements:

  1. Ample lighting. The photo must be taken in a well-lit area. Natural lighting is preferable.
  2. Center your face. Your face must be fully visible and centered in the frame. Make sure your face is not obscured by hair, hats, or glasses.
  3. Remove accessories such as hats or glasses that could cover any part of your face.
  4. Do not wear a face covering or a face mask that covers your nose and mouth.
  5. Do not wear heavy makeup or face paint that could alter your appearance.
  6. Be stoic. Keep a neutral expression on your face and avoid smiling, frowning, or making any other facial expression.
  7. Be still. Hold still for a few seconds after taking the photo to ensure that the image is clear and in focus.
